Net zero refers to achieving a balance between the level of greenhouse gas emissions produced and the level being removed from the atmosphere.
There are two different routes to achieving net zero, which work in tandem:
Reducing ongoing emissions
Actively removing greenhouse gases
When the level of emissions removed from the atmosphere in any period is greater than the level produced in the same period, the UK will be a territorial net zero emitter. The lower the level of emissions being produced, the easier this becomes.
